Nayakar Art

The chieftains appointed by Vijaynagar rulers to administer their expanded territories were called Nayaks or Amaranayaks. Under their patronage, the art of painting flourished from 16th to 18th centuries. They were some of the most prolific architects in South India. Nayakar art maybe called as an amalgam of Chalukyan, Cholan, Dravidian, Kerala and Karnatake styles and to some extent Kalinga styles.

Shanmughapriya is a trained Shilpa Shastra artist who has been engaging in extensive research on the forgotten artforms of ancient India such as Nayakar art and Paithani style of Chitrakathi. She is a teaching artist and has been part of some very prestigious art projects on a continuous basis
